The foundations of this business is based on complexity. This is not a new area, in fact it has been around for many years and used to provide deeper insights into areas as diverse as the natural world, weather, biological systems, society and organisational dynamics amongst others. However, it is only a relatively recent occurence that its applicability to business has been explored. How it relates to business fundamentally challenges the idea that everything can be described and understood in a linear cause and effect manner.
It has been seen that the recipe based (or best practice) approach to strategy, market research, knowledge and oganisational development has failed dismally. Practitioners and consultants that simply sell and implement the latest "recipe of the month" have shown an inability to provide new insight and thought through standardised methodologies that assume "one size fits all". In the complex environment of today, no predeterminable link exists between cause and effect. Causal links are highly contextual - they may be discovered in retrospect, but that does not mean that they are then predictable, as these relationships and patterns almost never repeat. This then puts into question the notion that a change intervention that was successful in one company will be readily transferable with the same impact to another. Additionally, "best practice" and management fads that tend to pervade popular business literature are rarely successful when implemented outside of the context (whether geographical or organisational) where they originated.
